While we await district mandated protocols for a possible return to in-person training, we urge everyone to focus on what we can control as we work together to prepare for the 2020-2021 sports year. Here's what we can do ahead of our seasons:
1. Schedule a physical examination and complete the athletic clearance process. We can't play a single game without our student-athletes completing the athletic clearance process. One of the requirements is for all our participating students to submit a valid physical examination for our emergency response records. Families should schedule a physical examination with their primary care physician for their student-athletes as soon as possible if they haven't already done so and complete the athletic clearance process. A guide to the athletic clearance and eligibility process, along with other essential forms and resources can be accessible through the following link: https://www.smmusd.org/Page/4222
Athletic Clearance Guide: https://www.smmusd.org/Athletics-Clearance
Physical Examination Form: https://www.smmusd.org/Athletics-HealthHistory
Alternative Physical Examination Sites (other than primary care provider):

2. Volunteer Driver requests: Obviously there are still so many variables at play right now that make it hard to predict how our sports seasons will play out for the 2020-2021 school year. One thing we can anticipate if we are fortunate enough to compete in athletic contests this school year is a shortage of district and charter transportation options available, especially if there will be social distancing restrictions placed on the number of passengers on district and charter buses, vans or other vehicles. Therefore we urge parents of student-athletes to apply to be volunteer drivers so we can safely transport them to their athletic contests. Information on the application process can be found here: https://www.smmusd.org/Page/4229
Parents that choose to volunteer should read the instructions and gather and complete all necessary forms and submit to Diane O'Brien, Student Records, to her email address: dobrien@smmusd.org
The "Tuberculosis Clearance and Emergency Contact Information Form for Staff/Volunteers" Form (page 3 of application) can be completed, scanned and emailed to Lu Anne Reed, Nurse's Office, at the following email address: lreed@smmusd.org
3. Remain academically engaged: As we near the end of the first grading period of the 2020-2021 school year, it is important for all students to continue to do their best in adjusting to our current distance learning format. Academic eligibility for our fall and spring seasons will be determined by the results of each grading period as it has always been. Student-athletes cannot participate in any athletic contests without completing the athletic clearance process and remaining academically eligible by attaining a minimum GPA of 2.0 and passing a minimum of 20 credits.
Again, we implore everyone to work together during these challenging and uncertain times as we prepare for our upcoming athletic year. We appreciate everyone's effort, patience and understanding thus far and as we move forward.
All the best,
Paul
